BATON ROUGE, LA — The Louisiana Freedom Caucus (LAFC) is unapologetic in its defense of every citizen’s right to protect themselves and their families from violent, lawless mobs. The LAFC affirms that this message is both timely and necessary with events targeting 10 Louisiana cities today.
The Public Service Announcement we issued reminds Louisianans of their right under state law to use their vehicle to escape immediate danger when in fear for their lives — including from rioters illegally blocking public roadways. This includes civil immunity under R.S. 9:2792.10 and protections under Louisiana’s justifiable use-of-force statutes. When surrounded by angry, violent mobs they have the option of driving out to safety.
“Instead of condemning the violence by their fellow travelers blinded by hatred for President Donald Trump, Democrats responded with their usual charges of racism,” said Rep. Beryl Amedée, Chairwoman of the Louisiana Freedom Caucus. “Democrat leadership in this state seems more offended by the notion of citizens defending themselves than by the violence that puts our people in harm’s way. They should apologize for supporting the ‘mostly peaceful protests’ the American people have been subjected to over the past weeks and years.”
During the nationwide riots against President Trump in 2020, violent agitators overran cities, looted businesses, and targeted police. In St. Louis, retired Police Captain David Dorn was shot and killed while trying to protect a business. Four other St. Louis police officers were also shot by violent mobs. In Las Vegas, an officer was permanently paralyzed by a gunshot to the head.
Across the country, over 900 law enforcement officers were injured during these “mostly peaceful protests” — including 277 federal officers defending the federal courthouse in Portland from a violent arson attack that rendered the structure unusable to date. 60 Secret Service agents were injured outside the White House when “mostly peaceful protesters” tried to overrun the home of America’s President.
The Louisiana Freedom Caucus will continue to defend the rule of law, protect innocent citizens, and ensure every Louisianan knows their rights in the face of lawless violence.
